Professor Dr. Raman Muthusamy

Dr. Raman Muthusamy is a distinguished academic leader and internationally recognized researcher in the field of public health, One Health, infectious diseases, and antimicrobial resistance for over three decades. He currently serves as the Dean of the School of Public Health Sciences & Technology at Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth (MRV), Hyderabad. Currently Dr.Raman M serves as External affiliate member for climate change and health disparities, Infectious diseases and Food and water solutions in the Global One Health Academy at North Carolina State University, USA (https://provost.ncsu.edu/global-one-health-academy/people/raman-muthusamy/ ) and member in Board of Advisors in One Health and Development Initiative (https://onehealthdev.org/our-board/).
Prior to joining MRV, Dr. Raman Muthusamy held key leadership roles, including Cluster Head of One Health, Infectious Diseases, and AMR in setting up the Centre for Global Health Research, Saveetha Medical College and Hospitals and part of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiologyat Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai (www.saveetha.com). He also served as Director and Programme Director at the Translational Research Platform a novel partnership initiative of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India with Govt of Tamil Nadu’s State Public University, TANUVAS for a decade(https://vidwan.inflibnet.ac.in/profile/330665).He served as Teaching and Research Faculty at TANUVAS, Chennai (https://www.tanuvas.ac.in/) a reputed State Public University for 28 years, teaching the Undergrads, PGs and Doctoral students and guided over 30 students in PhD, Masters, MPhil degree programs. During this tenure he set up an exclusive cGMP, a GLP ready lab, ISO Class 7&8 Clean room Lab, a BSL-2 and also involved in setting up of high containment BSL-3 facility at Central University Laboratory Campus at Chennai.
Notably, he was the National Coordinator (South India) and Principal Investigator of the prestigious UKRI-funded £18.1 million GCRF One Health poultry Hub, leading a multi-country, interdisciplinary team from India to address health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface over a period of five years from 2018-2022 in addition to leading atleast 7 other British Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council grants (https://gow.bbsrc.ukri.org/grants/PersonDetails.aspx?Personid=-233739) collaborating with atleast 18 universities /research organizations in Global North and South countries.
Dr. Raman Muthusamy’s current research collaborations span institutions such as the Australian National University, Christian Medical College Vellore, University of Washington, and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences. His projects focus on diverse themes including zoonoses, helminth infections, AMR, and the application of novel technologies like microneedle patches and AI in public health.
He holds a PhD in Parasite Immunology, a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Biology from the Moredun Research Institute and University of Edinburgh,UK and advanced degrees in Veterinary Science, Public Health, One Health, Tropical Disease Research -Implementation Research and Mass Communication.
With over 200 peer-reviewed publications with 6500 citations, H index 30& i10 Index-76 and active involvement in several global health platforms, Dr. Raman continues to mentor future-ready public health professionals through innovative and interdisciplinary education at SPHST.
